former Soviet Union
This term identifies the successor nations to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) or Soviet Union. The Soviet Union acted as a single country. Its government managed the entire economic system. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, they moved from central planning towards a market-based economy. As they did, USSR changed to a Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The CIS gave its members more freedom to decide their own policies.
