Myanmar is in Asia. Its capital is Yangon. It is at 22° 00' North, 98° 00' East. Myanmar has an area of 678,500 square kilometres (261,970 square miles). The population is 53,999,804. This population is from a 2011 estimate.

Naypyidaw is the new government capital. The government decided to move the capital from Yangon in 2005.

People here speak Burmese, Hmong, Khamti, Mon, Pali, Riang, and Shan. Religions beliefs here include animist, Baptist, Buddhism, Muslim, other, and Roman Catholic.

Minority ethnic groups have their own languages.

Place Names

Since 1989, the military authorities in Burma have promoted the name Myanmar as a conventional name for their state. No sitting legislature approved this, however. It is a derivative of the Burmese short-form name Myanma Naingngandaw.
